Reconciliation (2022)

A 19-year-old woman is killed by a bullet intended for her father in the tragic culmination of a bitter family feud between her father and his cousin, who is now imprisoned for murder. Or is her death just another twist in a saga of blood revenge? In the Albanian mountains, the ancient tribal law Kanun rules, and even though the killer is behind bars, the last word in the case has not been spoken. Religious and legal authorities - like the families involved - have their own powerful and conflicting interests in the controversial law, which is a taboo both in church and modern society. The question, however, is if the young woman’s father can find the faith to not only forgive his cousin, but also reconcile himself with him and break the vicious circle once and for all? Marija Zidar’s epic drama was filmed over 5 years in an obstinate patriarchal world, on the threshold of modern times. A mountain western from the old world, from the stuff of antique tragedies.

Kanun je soubor sekulárních albánských tradic, jimiž se po staletí řídí zdejší křesťané i muslimové a která byla v některých částech Albánie oživena po pádu komunismu. Jde o vnímání spravedlnosti založené na principu „oko za oko“, jehož součástí je i krevní msta - ale i odpuštění a usmíření. Ta může zasáhnout celé rodiny a trvat po generace. Dokumentaristka Marija Zidar sleduje jednu z rodin, která stojí právě před takovým rozhodnutím. Zatímco místní kněz se snaží patriarchu přesvědčit, aby šel cestou milosrdenství, přátelé v hospodě pokřikují, že krevní msta je hrdé albánské dědictví. Najde otec mrtvé dcery sílu odpustit? A co matka, která vše jen zpovzdálí sleduje – přijme rozhodnutí svého muže?

Una joven de 18 años es asesinada en una disputa familiar en las tierras altas de Albania. Su padre se ve abrumado por las presiones de un obispo local y del presidente de una ONG de la capital para que perdone al asesino encarcelado y a su familia, pero también para que se reconcilie con ellos, tal y como exige el antiguo código tribal Kanun.
