Lila Downs

Ana Lila Downs Sánchez, best known as Lila Downs (born September 9, 1968), is an American–Mexican singer-songwriter and actress. She performs her own compositions as well as tapping into Mexican traditional and popular music. She also incorporates indigenous Mexican influences and has recorded songs in many indigenous languages such as Mixtec, Zapotec, Mayan, Nahuatl and Purépecha. Born and raised in Oaxaca, she primarily studied at the Institute of Arts by Oaxaca and briefly attended University of Minnesota, before withdrawing to focus on her musical career. She soon began performing in the traditional music scene of Oaxaca City.

Sie interpretiert sowohl eigene Kompositionen als auch traditionelle und populäre mexikanische Musik. Darüber hinaus lässt sie indigene mexikanische Einflüsse in ihre Musik einfließen und hat Lieder in zahlreichen indigenen Sprachen wie Mixtekisch, Zapotekisch, Maya, Nahuatl und Purépecha aufgenommen. Geboren und aufgewachsen in Oaxaca, studierte sie hauptsächlich am Kunstinstitut von Oaxaca und besuchte kurzzeitig die University of Minnesota, bevor sie ihr Studium abbrach, um sich ganz ihrer Musikkarriere zu widmen. Schon bald trat sie in der traditionellen Musikszene von Oaxaca-Stadt auf.

Lila Downs​ es una cantante, compositora, productora, actriz y antropóloga​ mexicana. Además de cantar en español e inglés, también interpreta melodías en diversos idiomas nativos de su país, como mixteco y zapoteco, así como maya, purépecha y náhuatl. Reivindica sus raíces mexicanas y de los pueblos indígenas, además de la música regional de Oaxaca.
