Saeed Roustaee

Saeed Roustayi (Persian: سعید روستایی, born 14 August 1989) is an Iranian film director and screenwriter. He graduated from Soore University with a Bachelor of Film and Television in Directing. "Life and a Day" (2016) is his first major cinematic work. At the Fajr International Film Festival, Roustayi won 2 Crystal Simorghs for best directing and best screenplay. He received the 2016 Reflet d'Or for Best Feature at the Geneva International Film Festival Tous Ecrans. In 2022, his second film, Just 6.5 (2019), was nominated for the César Award for Best Foreign Film. In April 2022, his third film, Leila's Brothers (2022), was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. His works primarily focus on issues of social injustice, as well as his portrayals of women in Iranian society.

Saeed Roustaee est né en 1989 à Téhéran, où il est sorti diplômé en réalisation de la Soureh Film University. Il a d’abord réalisé trois court-métrages et un documentaire très remarqué, couronné de plus d’une centaine de prix. Son premier long-métrage, Life And A Day (2016), a reçu les neuf principaux prix du Festival International du Film de Fajr à Téhéran, le plus important festival iranien, ainsi que les prix majeurs de l’Annual Iranian Film Awards et de l’Annual Iranian Film Critics Award, et dans divers festivals internationaux. Son très remarqué deuxième film, La loi de Téhéran (2019), a été sélectionné au Festival de Venise et a remporté le Grand Prix et le Prix de la Critique du Festival International du Film Policier REIMS Polar. Le film a également été nommé au César du Meilleur Film Etranger. Son dernier film, Leïla et ses frères (2022), a été présenté en compétition au Festival de Cannes, où il a remporté le prix FIPRESCI. Le film a été interdit en Iran, et Saeed Roustaee a écopé d’une peine de 6 mois de prison et 5 ans d’interdiction de tournage pour « propagande contre le régime ». La peine a depuis été suspendue.
