2000年頃から舞台に出演し始め、01年の舞台「The Royal Family」でイブニング・スタンダード新人賞を獲得。03年、「ウォリアークイーン」（日本劇場未公開）で映画デビューし、大ヒット映画「プラダを着た悪魔」（06）でハリウッド進出を果たしブレイク。以降、「アジャストメント」（11）や「オール・ユー・ニード・イズ・キル」（14）などハリウッド大作のヒロイン役に起用され、「ボーダーライン」（15）、「ガール・オン・ザ・トレイン」（16）、「メリー・ポピンズ リターンズ」（18）などで主演を務める。「ヴィクトリア女王　世紀の愛」（09）、「砂漠でサーモン・フィッシング」（11）、「イントゥ・ザ・ウッズ」（14）ではいずれもゴールデングローブ賞主演女優賞にノミネートされた。夫ジョン・クラシンスキーの監督作で、夫婦共演した「クワイエット・プレイス」（18）は、全米大ヒットを記録。宮崎駿監督作「風立ちぬ」（13）英語吹き替え版では、里見菜穂子の声を担当した。
