Gael García Bernal

Gael García Bernal (born November 30, 1978) is a Mexican actor and filmmaker who acts in both Spanish-language and English-language films and series. He is known for his performances in the films Y tu mamá también (2001), Bad Education (2004), The Motorcycle Diaries (2004), Babel (2006), Coco (2017), Old (2021), and Cassandro (2023). He has also played music conductor Rodrigo de Souza in the television drama series Mozart in the Jungle (2014–2018) and starred in the Disney+ special Werewolf by Night (2022). García Bernal was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of a young Che Guevara in The Motorcycle Diaries in 2005, and in 2016 won his first Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy for Mozart in the Jungle. He and fellow actor Diego Luna founded the production company Canana Films in Mexico City. In 2016, Time magazine named him in the annual Time 100 Most Influential People list. In 2020, The New York Times ranked him No. 25 in its list of the 25 Greatest Actors of the 21st Century.

Er ist bekannt für seine Rollen in Filmen wie „Amores perros“ (2000), „Y tu mamá también“ (2001), „Bad Education“ (2004), „Die Reise des jungen Che“ (2004), „Babel“ (2006), „Coco“ (2017), „Old“ (2021) und „Cassandro“ (2023). Er spielte außerdem den Dirigenten Rodrigo de Souza in der Fernsehserie „Mozart in the Jungle“ (2014–2018) und hatte eine Hauptrolle im Disney+-Special „Werewolf by Night“ (2022). García Bernal nació en Guadalajara, México, hijo de Patricia Bernal, actriz y ex modelo, y José Angel García, actor y director. Su padrastro es Sergio Yazbek, con quien se casó su madre cuando García Bernal era joven. Comenzó a actuar con tan solo un año y pasó la mayor parte de su adolescencia protagonizando telenovelas. Gael estudió el Bachillerato Internacional, siendo la química sin duda su asignatura favorita. Cuando tenía catorce años, enseñó a leer a pobladores en las zonas indígenas en México, a menudo trabajando con los indios huicholes. En su adolescencia, participó en manifestaciones pacíficas durante el levantamiento de Chiapas de 1994.
