Wtedy zagrała też w pierwszym, arabskim filmie. Po powrocie do rodzinnego miasta zapisała się do National Institute of Dramatic Art, grywała też w teatrze. W 1995 roku dostała nagrodę dla najlepszej aktorki za rolę Ofelii w "Hamlecie" Szekspira. Prawdziwą przyjemność sprawiała jej praca na planie filmowym. Cate wystąpiła m. in. w "Rajskiej drodze", "Elizabeth", "Utalentowanym panu Ripleyu", "Mąż idealny (1997)Mężu idealnym", a także przeboju kinowym "Władcy Pierścieni". W 2005 roku otrzymała wreszcie Oskara za rolę w "Aviatorze" Martina Scorsese.
