Avis-Marie Barnes

Avis-Marie Barnes was born in NJ and raised in Montclair. She did not realize her love for the theater until her Freshman year in high school when a classmate, set to direct a one-act play, asked her to play a role in it. She went from not knowing what she wanted to do, to seeing the rest of her life. After attending Howard University’s Fine Arts Department and receiving her BFA, she moved back to New Jersey and worked in New York theater for 13 years, as well as working in films as an extra, and in soaps, and commercials. In 1992 an opportunity came to attend a seminar to meet casting directors and talent agencies in Orlando, Florida, at a time when Florida was being tapped as “Hollywood East”. After the seminar, she made the leap to leave New Jersey and move to Florida in the hopes of obtaining an agent and a SAG card and taking that back to New Jersey. But after a time of steadily increasing work in Industrials, television, voiceover, films, and theater; as well as trying her hand at directing theatrical productions – she has made Florida home. But, in her heart, she is still from New Jersey! Along the way, she has put together a business building and maintaining websites, filming actors’ auditions and sending them to the proper casting offices, and holding classes teaching others how to audition in front of the camera – and how to film auditions as well.

Avis-Marie Barnes wurde in New Jersey geboren und wuchs in Montclair auf. Ihre Liebe zum Theater entdeckte sie erst in ihrem ersten Highschool-Jahr, als ein Klassenkamerad, der ein Einakter-Stück inszenieren sollte, sie bat, eine Rolle zu übernehmen. Von dem Moment an, in dem sie noch nicht wusste, was sie machen wollte, sah sie klar ihre Zukunft vor sich. Nach ihrem Studium an der Kunstfakultät der Howard University, wo sie ihren BFA erhielt, kehrte sie nach New Jersey zurück und arbeitete 13 Jahre lang im Theater in New York, außerdem als Statistin in Filmen, in Seifenopern und Werbespots. 1992 ergab sich die Gelegenheit, an einem Seminar in Orlando, Florida, teilzunehmen, um Casting-Direktoren und Talentagenturen kennenzulernen – zu einer Zeit, als Florida als „Hollywood East“ galt. Nach dem Seminar wagte sie den Schritt, New Jersey zu verlassen und nach Florida zu ziehen, in der Hoffnung, dort einen Agenten und eine SAG-Karte zu bekommen, um diese dann wieder mit nach New Jersey zu nehmen. Doch nach einer Zeit stetig wachsender Engagements in Industriefilmen, Fernsehen, Synchronisation, Filmen und Theater sowie ersten Erfahrungen als Regisseurin bei Theaterproduktionen hat sie Florida zu ihrer Heimat gemacht. Doch im Herzen fühlt sie sich immer noch als New Jerseyerin! Im Laufe der Zeit hat sie außerdem ein Geschäft aufgebaut, das Webseiten erstellt und pflegt, Schauspieler bei ihren Vorsprechen filmt und die Aufnahmen an die entsprechenden Casting-Büros schickt. Zudem gibt sie Kurse, in denen sie anderen beibringt, wie man vor der Kamera vorspricht und wie man Vorsprechen filmt.
