Lawrence Kasdan

Lawrence Edward Kasdan (born January 14, 1949) is an American filmmaker. He is the co-writer of the Star Wars films The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Return of the Jedi (1983), The Force Awakens (2015), and Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018). He also wrote Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and The Bodyguard (1992), and is the writer-director of Body Heat (1981), The Big Chill (1983), Silverado (1985), The Accidental Tourist (1988), and Dreamcatcher (2003). Kasdan is known for updating old Hollywood genres—film noir, science fiction, and Westerns—in a classical dramatic style with quick-witted dialogue while dealing with contemporary social themes. As a director, he has made various personal films that examine characters and generations. Kasdan has been nominated for four Academy Awards: as a producer for Best Picture nominee The Accidental Tourist, for which he was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, and for Best Original Screenplay for both The Big Chill and Grand Canyon (1991). He has often collaborated with his wife, Meg Kasdan, his brother, Mark Kasdan, and his two sons, Jonathan Kasdan and Jake Kasdan. He has frequently cast Kevin Kline and William Hurt in his films. Lawrence Edward Kasdan ist ein US-amerikanischer Regisseur und Drehbuchautor. Lawrence Kasdan machte zunächst seinen Master of Arts (M.A.) an der University of Michigan. Mit seinem Umzug nach Los Angeles begann er Drehbücher zu schreiben. Kasdans Drehbuch für Zwei wie Katz und Maus zog die Aufmerksamkeit von Steven Spielberg auf sich. Er stellte Kasdan daraufhin George Lucas vor, von dem er dann für das Drehbuch zu Indiana Jones – Jäger des verlorenen Schatzes engagiert wurde. Nachdem Leigh Brackett, die den ersten Entwurf für Das Imperium schlägt zurück geschrieben hatte, 1978 verstorben war, beauftragte Lucas Kasdan mit der Fertigstellung des Drehbuches. Auch an der Star-Wars-Fortsetzung Die Rückkehr der Jedi-Ritter (1983) war Kasdan als Drehbuchautor beteiligt. Mehr als 30 Jahre später schrieb Kasdan das Drehbuch für Star Wars: Das Erwachen der Macht. Auch an Solo: A Star Wars Story, der 2018 erschien, wirkte er als Autor mit. Als Regisseur inszenierte er mit Light & Magic (2022) eine dokumentarische Miniserie über Industrial Light & Magic. 1981 gab er sein Debüt als Regisseur mit dem Film Heißblütig – Kaltblütig. Zu seinen weiteren Filmen als Regisseur zählen Silverado (1985), Ich liebe Dich zu Tode (1990) und French Kiss (1995). Darüber hinaus trat er auch als Schauspieler auf, unter anderem als Dr. Green in Besser geht’s nicht (1997) mit Jack Nicholson.
