Erich Maria Remarque

Erich Maria Remarque, born Erich Paul Remark, was a German author, best known for his 1929 anti-war novel "All Quiet on the Western Front", based on his experiences as a conscript in Wold War I. When publishing that novel, he changed his middle name in memory of his mother and reverted to the earlier spelling of his family name, which had been changed by his grandfather in the 19th century. His writing was regarded as unpatriotic by the Nazis, and as soon as they came to power they burned his books, so he emigrated to Switzerland. In 1938 the Germans revoked his citizenship, and in 1939 he and his wife left Switzerland for the United States, where they lived until 1948. They then returned to Switzerland. He was married to actress Ilse Jutta Zambona from 1925 to 1930, and they then remarried in 1938 in order to prevent her from being sent back to Germany from Switzerland. They divorced again in 1957, and in 1958 he married actress Paulette Goddard and was married to her until he died in 1970. His first marriage to Zambona was stormy, with both being unfatihful. He had relationships with both Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr and Marlene Dietrich. He wrote some 20 novels, plays, screenplays and collections of short stories.

Erich Maria Remarque, eigentlich Erich Paul Remark, war ein deutscher Schriftsteller. Er wurde mit dem 1928 erstmals erschienenen Antikriegsroman Im Westen nichts Neues weltberühmt. Im April 1929 tauchte in der nationalistischen Presse die unzutreffende Behauptung auf, Remarques Geburtsname sei Kramer (das Ananym zum tatsächlichen Geburtsnamen Remark). Dieses Gerücht wurde von den Nationalsozialisten gestreut, die auch fälschlich behaupteten, Remarque sei Jude und er habe am Krieg nicht teilgenommen, um ihn als Lügner hinzustellen. Im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland wurden seine Bücher verboten und 1933 öffentlich verbrannt. 1938 wurde ihm die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft aberkannt. 1939 emigrierte er in die USA, wo er Anerkennung als Schriftsteller fand. 1947 erhielt er die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft.

Son livre À l'Ouest, rien de nouveau (Im Westen nichts Neues), un roman pacifiste sur la Première Guerre mondiale, connut, dès sa parution en 1929, un succès mondial retentissant et reste un ouvrage-phare sur le premier conflit mondial. À l'instar de Catherine soldat (Die Katrin wird Soldat) d'Adrienne Thomas, ce livre fut brûlé lors des autodafés de 1933 en Allemagne. E.M. Remarque s'exila en Suisse, puis aux États-Unis où il obtint sa naturalisation. Il se fait appeler Erich Maria Remarque dès 1924, le changement de prénom, pour « Maria », datant de novembre 1922. Ce changement de prénom est un hommage à sa mère, bien que sa belle-mère prenne cet hommage pour elle.
